Low Sec Mining

So now we come to mining in low sec. Low Sec mining is all about getting as much done in the least amount of time, and fitting your ship to get the hell outa there in a hurry if things go bad. This is a whole lot different than mining in high sec. In high sec you have essentially a few choices on how to fit your ships, with the ultimate goal of fitting a hulk either with as much cargo capacity for reduced hauling times when mining solo, or fitted to maximize production when mining in a fleet that includes haulers or an Orca to gather up your ore and carry it to a station to be refined. This isn’t really safe either since pirates are making more and more excursions into high sec every day. Miners in high sec also really need to learn how to protect yourselves. So what is written here for low sec is true in high sec, and infact null sec as well.

The basis for most of these slippery setups when fittings allow it is Warp Strength and ECM, enhanced with a little acceleration buffing with Low Friction Nozzle rigs. Some ships, such as the frigates, don’t have the specs to fully fit-out an evasion setup as described above, and we’ll come up with some alternatives, such as the frigates natural ability to align and warp out fast. The skills required to fit these setups includes Electonics V to boost your ship’s CPU output, and Engineering V to boost Power Grid output as well as the ordinary mining skills requirement necessary to fly and use the ships and mining lasers. Without these skills, you will soon discover the equipment doesn’t all fit on your ships. In this case you shouldn’t fly these ships in low sec, because you stand a much higher chance of getting the ship and your pod blown up.

Ok so begining miners should be flying a mining frigate like the Navitas or should be scouting for the fleet in a scout ship like the Imicus or it’s T2 equivilent the Helios. It only takes a few days of training to be able to perform scouting services for the fleet, and the service is very valuable as it saves the fleet time seeking out the next location for the mining operation.

Both from a risk management and from an escapist point of view, the mining frigate is the safest option when mining in low sec. As well, when compared to the procurer, a mining frigate when used in a fleet out-performs the Procurer mining barge and approaches the Retreiver at entry level performance. However, when used solo, the mining barges are clearly the most productive option when one considers how much ore the barges can retain in their cargo holds, thus spending more time mining and less time in warp.

Scanning ship setups:
Helios
1x Covert Ops Cloak
1x Sisters Core Probe Launcher
1x Microwarp Drive
1x ECM Burst II
2x Overdrive II
2x Graviton Scanner Rigs I
10x Sisters Core Probes

A Navitas should be fitted thusly:
2x Mining Laser II
1x Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thruster or 1x Catalyzed Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters
1x ‘Halcyon’ Core Equalizer I
1x Hornet EC-300

The Procurer should be fitted thusly:
1x Modulated Strip Miner II
1x Survey Scanner II
2x Warp Core Stabaliser II
3x Low Friction Nozzle II Rigs
1x Hornet EC-300

When mining in barges, you should always be aligned toward you warp-out target, which should be a safespot bookmark and not a celestial body where the pirates’ mates might be waiting for you to drop in. The ECM drone should always be flying so it can automatically defend against any agressors and hopefully break their target lock on you.

Next on the list is the retreiver, it is the mining barge most miners will be using until their training is complete. It’s produces 2x as much ore as the procurer and sports a larger cargo hold. As well it still aligns and accelerates faster than it’s larger cousins. It is also still relatively inexpensive when compared to the larger vessels costing usually less than 5 million ISK.
